“Thusfar,thewealthofnationshasbeenalmostalwaysassociatedwithlongevity,health,happinessorlifesatisfaction,”explainspsychologicalscientistShigehiroOishioftheUniversityofVirginia.“Giventhatmeaninginlifeisanimportantaspectofoverallwell-being,wewantedtolookmorecarefullyatdifferentialpatterns,correlates(相关物),andpredictorsformeaninginlife.”
OishiandcolleagueEdDieneroftheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaigninvestigatedlifesatisfaction,meaning,andwell-beingbyexaminingdatafromthe2007GallupWorldPoll,alarge-scalesurveyofover
140,000participantsfrom132countries.Inadditiontoansweringabasiclifesatisfactionquestion,participantswereasked:
“Doyoufeelyourlifehasanimportantpurposeormeaning?
”and“Isreligionanimportantpartofyourdailylife?
”
Thedatarevealedsomeunexpectedtrends:
“AmongAmericans,thosewhoarehighinlifesatisfactionarealsohighinmeaninginlife,”saysOishi.“Butwhenwelookedatthesocietallevelofanalysis,wefoundacompletelydifferentpatternoftheassociationbetweenmeaninginlifeandlifesatisfaction.”
Whenlookingacrossmanycountries,OishiandDienerfoundthatpeopleinwealthiernationsweremoreeducated,hadfewerchildren,andexpressedmoreindividualisticattitudescomparedtothoseinpoorercountries—allfactorsthatwereassociatedwithhigherlifesatisfactionbutasignificantlylowersenseofmeaninginlife.”
Thedatasuggestthatreligiositymayplayanimportantrole:
Residentsofwealthiernations,wherereligiosityislower,reportedlessmeaninginlifeandhadhighersuicideratesthanpoorercountries.
Accordingtotheresearchers,religionmayprovidemeaningtolifetotheextentthatithelpspeopletoovercomepersonaldifficultyandcopewiththestrugglesofworkingtosurviveinpooreconomicconditions.
